The Effectiveness of Intensive Outpatient Treatment

Intensive outpatient treatment programs (IOPs) can be effective for individuals who have completed inpatient treatment as after-care, those who have addiction or substance abuse issues but do not need residential treatment, as well as those who need a flexible treatment schedule because of work or school schedules. Fusion Recovery San Jose provides IOP to individuals with many different insurance plans and substance abuse issues. An IOP may be right for you if you can confirm the following statements:

  • I can handle or have overcome the physical symptoms of withdrawal. Or can detox on an outpatient basis.

  • I believe I can keep to the guidelines of an outpatient treatment plan.

  • I have sufficient and regular transportation to treatment.

  • I do not need 24/7 psychological or medical supervision.

  • I believe there are multiple paths to recovery.

  • I want to be sober.

  • I feel my work or school schedule does not accommodate inpatient treatment.

  • I feel my addiction or substance abuse problem is not serious enough to justify inpatient treatment.

How does Intensive Outpatient Work?

At Fusion Recovery, IOP takes place for three hours per night (6 PM to 9PM) on Tuesday's, Wednesday's, and Thursday's. Patients do not live at the facility. Instead, they come to the facility for several hours a day to engage in counseling and group therapy. IOP is a good option for those who believe that they would have financial, schedule or family concerns and don't feel they need residential treatment. It is also meant for patients who have been discharged from residential treatment programs as a step-down to after-care and continuing to build their skills and support in recovery. IOP can provide both mental health and substance abuse recovery counseling. Our IOP also helps you monitor your substance abuse if you are still using drugs or drinking during the outpatient detox phase. In addition, we educate you about how to reduce or avoid anxiety and prevent situations that could lead to relapse.

Outpatient treatment programs at Fusion Recovery in San Jose, CA, can help you continue to recover and prevent relapse. Fusion Recovery does not discharge patients who relapse. Our therapists and counselors work with you to determine the cause of the relapse and prevent a future relapse. The average patient's participation in IOP in San Jose varies from 8 to 12 weeks.

You may be drug tested while in the IOP program. The point of the test is not to kick you out. It is to help provide accountability during treatment and ensure you are medically appropriate for treatment. It is not necessary that you stop using or drinking all of a sudden to begin IOP. It is our goal to guide you as you become clean and sober. We are aware that you may need medical support to become drug-free and can help you detox on an outpatient basis through one of our affiliated physicians.

At Fusion Recovery in San Jose, we believe there are many ways for you to work toward sobriety. We evaluate each patient to create a customized and effective treatment plan. If one avenue that we suggest does not work for you, let's explore another. Our philosophy is to motivate you to engage in the treatment program, not force you to go along with it. We understand that you will need emotional, family and often spousal support. As a State Certified Outpatient Treatment Program, we have the credentialed and licensed staff to treat you and listen to your needs. Fusion Recovery San Jose is known for being a compassionate, kind and understanding support center.

Why is IOP More Successful Than Residential Treatment?

IOP provides a way for a patient to recover without placing them in an artificial, isolating environment. A patient engaged in their recovery can still experience some of the stresses of the outside world. Yet the patient has the refuge and support of the treatment center. He or she becomes part of a community of individuals who choose to work together to remain sober and engage in healthy lifestyles. In addition, clients receive one-on-one therapy and holistic treatments from qualified professionals.

IOP is an avenue for a patient to build a stable routine to stay sober. When a patient regularly comes to his or her appointments, he or she demonstrates their commitment to sobriety. The patient's pattern establishes a regular path for them to follow over the course of days, weeks and months.

In addition, being exposed to family, friends and colleagues can help an individual recover. When a patient is able to develop a normal, drug-free routine, he or she can find stability in everyday actions and develop tools and skills to deal with daily life. The choices a person makes outside the treatment facility while engaged in IOP can help them stay sober after completing the course of treatment.

IOPs are proven by multiple studies to be just as effective as inpatient and residential treatment programs. Research indicates that 50 to 70 percent of participants in a survey on treatment reported abstinence at their follow up. Inpatient programs offered no higher percentage of success in research studies.
